Alignment Wedges – Information & Ordering

Got back pain? Hip pain? Knee pain? ITB syndrome? Do you sit a lot? Drive a lot? You need to know about Alignment Wedges!

If you look for products on the market to ease back pain, you’ll find that they all address back pain from a front-to-back perspective. They’ll put a wedge behind your back or under your butt. They’ll put something behind your sacrum to push it forward. They’ll use memory foam to soften the impact of the seat. And they may help a little. Some people get some relief.

But what nothing else does is address the back from a side to side perspective. And that’s where I believe a lot of back pain comes from. Most of us sit in an imbalanced way, with our weight leaning more to one hip than another, particularly if there is crossing of the ankles or legs. A major culprit of imbalance in the hips and the resultant back and leg issues is our posture while driving.

When many of us sit in a car, we sit with our legs splayed out, our left leg resting against the door, our right leg resting against the console or completely unsupported. This external rotation of the legs at the hips can result in pelvic floor imbalance that can cause the sacrum (the large bone at the base of the spine) to shift to one side or the other, the same sort of result of sitting with the legs crossed. If the sacrum shifts up on one side, that will set the balance of the spine off, resulting in pain and tightness that can travel all the way up the back into the neck. An imbalanced sacrum can also contribute to pain and tightness into the hips and legs, knee problems and sciatica.

From my 35 years of experience in going to many chiropractors, I know that the sacroiliac joint is something that almost always needed attention for me. That’s the joint between the sacrum and the hip bone. My sacrum kept twisting, with one side rising higher, causing pain in the lower back. From my over 25 years as a massage therapist, and 15 years specializing in Myofascial Release, I know that a lot of people suffer from this issue! Here’s the thing: that is primarily a side-to-side issue! And every other product on the market offers a front-to-back solution. So, people may get a little bit of relief because it is actually a three-dimensional issue, but they still suffer because they aren’t addressing the most key source of the problems.

Here is what makes Alignment Wedges unique: when used while driving or sitting, Driving Wedges help to keep the legs and hips in proper alignment, so the sacrum doesn’t twist up to either side. The pelvic floor can stay stable, supporting the sacrum in proper alignment. Over time, your body can rebalance itself and areas of strain can release.

When pursuing pain management, whether through chiropractic or massage or more traditional medical treatments, self-care at home is an important part of treatment. Not repeating the patterns that caused the pain and/or injury in the first place is also important. For many of us, how we sit, particularly when we drive, is one of the root causes of our pain – whether it be lower back, hip, or knee. And because the body is all connected through the myofascial system, even upper back pain, neck pain, and headaches can be caused by the imbalance in the pelvic floor. The benefits of good posture and keeping your sacrum aligned cannot be overemphasized.

Additionally, Alignment Wedges create a light myofascial release along the iliotibial bands, which run along the outside of the thighs. Most people are very tight along this part of the leg. Just have someone press in or try rolling your outer thigh on a foam roller or exercise ball on the floor or bed and see how tender that is! When an iliotibial band is tight, it can put a lot of pressure on the knee joint, causing chronic pain, such as runner’s knee, and even contributing to acute conditions where the knee joint is compromised. There are lots of stretches recommended for people who suffer from ITB syndrome, runner’s knee, and hip issues – and those are all good. But not everyone has the time or is willing to make the effort to stretch like that. Alignment Wedges help to soften those tissue restrictions while you are driving or sitting – as an added benefit to keeping your hips aligned and giving you much more comfort!

How do you know if Alignment Wedges would benefit you?

*Do you drive a lot? Or even just a little? (Driving Wedges can improve comfort levels on even short drives!)

*Do you sit a lot? In a car or anywhere else?

*Do your legs or back ache when you are driving?

*Are you stiff and sore when you get out of the car, truck, or RV after driving for more than a couple of hours?

*Do you walk funny for a little while when you get to a rest stop?

*If you have to drive for a full day or more, are you sore for days after your trip?

The idea for Alignment Wedges came to me when I was driving between Michigan and Florida several times a year. I was aching when I was driving and then I’d be stiff and sore for days afterwards. I had neck wedges that I’d use for some relief along my back, but a lot of my problem was the aching in my legs. I would hold my hand between my leg and the door, giving some relief – but it’s difficult to drive that way for sustained periods of time and my hand would get tired. I tried sticking a water bottle between my leg and the door. That helped a little, but was awkward. I wished there were something comfortable and safe that I could stick between my leg and the door. But there wasn’t. So I created the ideal solution.

As a massage therapist and bodyworker for over 25 years, I realized that part of what was making me walk funny when I got to rest areas after driving 3-4 hours was that my legs were rolling out, externally rotating my hips when I rested my left leg against the door and my right leg against the console. After being in this misaligned position for hours at a time, the effort to get my hips back into alignment when I got out of the car led to some painful walking and stiffness until I could work out those kinks. Additionally, after driving for two days, I would end up with pain that I couldn’t just walk off in a few minutes. It could take more than a week for me to feel back to normal.

As I thought about it, I realized that sitting with the hips externally rotated like that could create imbalance in the pelvic floor, which could result in the sacrum (the bone at the base of the spine) twisting in one direction or another, which could lead to lower back pain and imbalance, which could cause pain all the way up into the neck and shoulders. The body is all connected, after all, through the myofascial system – and imbalances in one area can lead to imbalance, pain, and restrictions in other areas.

So, I fashioned some wedges that I could tuck under my legs, holding my legs in alignment – and connected them with an elastic strap both so that they couldn’t fall at my feet and also so that the small pressure the strap exerted could create some myofascial release (reducing tension) along my Iliotibial Band (outer side of my thighs where most people store some tightness and restriction, which can lead to sciatic pain, knee strain, and other painful conditions and postural distortions).

After using my wedges for over a year, I can tell you that the results were awesome! Not only did I have significantly less pain while driving, I actually felt better after long drives! I am walking better than I have in years! I believe that is because while I’m driving, I am having basically a treatment that relaxes my legs. That has shown up in my life as improved mobility and less pain in general. From sports injuries as a kid, I have severe arthritis in both knees. I had been able to keep it mostly under control with yoga and stretching, but I still often walked with a noticeable limp. Since using Alignment Wedges, I have little to no limp at all most of the time.

I must make a disclaimer here that I am making no medical claims for the Alignment Wedges. My personal results may not be typical, although many people have found great benefit from using them.

The purpose of the Alignment Wedges is to keep your hips in proper alignment when you drive (or sit) – to keep your legs from rolling out. When I tuck them in, I notice a significant improvement in comfort right away. Immediately. You could probably test that for yourself by sticking your hand in a fist between your leg and the door. See if that support doesn’t give you a bit of relief. If it does, Alignment Wedges could be a dream come true for you!

I use Alignment Wedges all of the time – even for just a short ride down the street. For me, they make driving so much more comfortable!

Alignment Wedges are lightweight and very easy to use.

1) Sit in your seat and put on your seatbelt.

2) Gently tuck a wedge under each leg, with the elastic strap resting on top of your legs.

3) Adjust the elastic strap for your comfort. IMPORTANT: Only adjust the strap while you are completely stopped! DO NOT attempt to adjust the strap while the vehicle is moving.

4) You can move the wedges up and down the outside of your thighs as desired for your comfort and ease. If you feel a tightness or pain in your thighs, you can put the wedge there. Otherwise, wherever it feels most comfortable.

5) The strap on the wedges is partly to make sure that the wedges don’t fall at your feet. Do not remove the strap.

6) Enjoy your drive!

You can also use Alignment Wedges in a variety of ways outside of driving – wherever you are sitting that has a surface you can use to hold them. Below are pictures of some ways that I used them while sitting at a training for long hours that helped prevent my legs from cramping.

*Truck drivers

*RV travelers

*Anybody who drives

*Anybody who sits – Yes! Alignment Wedges can be used almost anywhere! Use them at home on the couch. Use them in the waiting room at the doctor’s (yes, I did that! – and it not only made me more comfortable, but people wanted to know about them). Use them at work while sitting at your desk. Use them while flying or traveling by train or bus (assuming there is room in the seat for them).

*People with prosthetic legs. A friend of mine introduced me to a friend of hers in a restaurant where they were dining. She told me her friend would like to try out the wedges. I ran out to my car to grab a pair and handed them to her friend. Within a minute, the woman told me that she wanted to purchase them. I was confused because that was so fast! How could she tell? She explained that she has a prosthetic leg, the weight of which was constantly pulling on her hip. The wedges gave her immediate support and relief.

For less than the price of a 90 minute massage, you can have a set of Alignment Wedges that will give you years of driving/sitting comfort!

Are Alignment Wedges safe? Do they interfere at all with your driving?

Alignment Wedges are totally safe. They do not prevent you from moving your legs freely and easily while you drive. The strap prevents them from falling at your feet.

What are Alignment Wedges made of?

Alignment Wedges are made of integral skin polyurethane foam. They have a little give to them, so while they are firm, they don’t feel uncomfortably hard against your body. They do retain their shape with normal use.

How can I clean Alignment Wedges?

Just use a little warm water and gentle soap. Do not use harsh chemicals.

Do Alignment Wedges fit everyone?

They are designed to fit in a car seat. They have an adjustable elastic strap that can go as short as needed and as long as would stretch across the expanse of a car seat up to the height of the steering wheel (and actually will stretch a little longer than that).

Alignment Wedges are made in the USA.
Alignment Wedges are Patented, both utility and design. If anyone is interested in licensing the patents, please contact me.
Alignment Wedges are currently sold exclusively on this website.
